A clean and mostly modern (a small tv in room and an air-conditioner that works) hotel just a few yards from the banks of the Niger River. A thoroughly pleasant atmosphere, especially after having braved the rather rustic and spartan accomodations offered in Tombouctou or the Dogon country.
There is a restaurant and bar on site. Neither will redefine the art of gastronomic adventure travel, but believe me, they are most welcome after a few days in the back country.
Unique Qualities: A clean swimming pool is an attractive late afternoon activity after beating the dusty trails to Djenne and back.
Artifact vendors crowd the streets just off hotel property. These guys were aggressive, but pretty fair. I was not looking to weigh myself down with African trinkets, but I did want a carved hippopotomus. And I was able to secure a nice hefty hippo for $20. Bargained down from a starting price of $50.
