Bako is the home to tens, if not hundreds of thousands of flying mammals. At dusk the bats venture out of their caves to begin a night of insect devouring. Try to be in the jungle at dusk and watch as the bats negotiate the trees with a series of aerodynamic tricks.
I used to be fairly scared of bats. But a night in the jungle cured me of that as thousands of bats swooped past my head just inches from me. But not one made contact, thank goodness.
Later that night the bats put on a show at the canteen as we had our dinner. Hundreds came flying right through the open air dining center.
