Founded on 1702 by João Siqueira Afonso who found lots of veins of gold in the downhill of Serra de São Jose, the new little village were called Arraial de Santo Antônio.

This is how the actual city of Tiradentes was born.

In the following years important people who were born in the city made their way over the Brazilian history. The most famous of then being Joaquin José da Silva Chavier, nicknamed Tiradentes, the martyr of Inconfidencia Mineira, a plot of a group of the high society of Minas Gerais, that became known as “Os Inconfidentes”, to overcome the Imperator of Portugal. All the intrigue ended with the Inconfidentes been betrayed by one of themselves and with Tiradentes, the poorest of then, been arrested and killed brutally.

This city holds 300 years of history and revive then in the old streets and churches. Unlike Ouro Preto, Tiradentes seems to be, yeat, undiscovered by the hordes of tourists who infests the streets of Ouro Preto (oh, and Tiradentes doesn’t those looooong hills you got at Ouro Preto).
