Whales Tail near Battle Harbour - Battle Harbour

Whales Tail near Battle Harbour

Whale Watching

Never in my life did I see as many whales and seals in my life as I did when I visited Battle Harbour.

I was disappointed I didn't have a better camera and some binoculars. This is the best picture I could get of a whales tail. With a better camera though some fellow tourist were getting amazing shots.

On this particular day there were about 15 or so whales and literally hundreds of seals swimming everywhere enroute the Battle Harbour.

Great Hiking

Hiking around Battle Harbour and surrounding areas is a real treat. The number of birds and whales that can be spotted are plus number one.

The area is also infamous for the number of very rare plants and excussive cloudberries or bakeapples.

You also get to enjoy the rugged landscaped, elevated views and explore the remains of historic and once busy fishing communities along the way.

An abundance of birds. - Battle Harbour

An abundance of birds.

Bird Watching

I keep stating now at a number of destinations that I am not a bird expert and that remains true today.

However in the Battle Harbour area a lot of research has been done on the number of bird species in the area and it is a great place for bird watching, there are hundreds of different species and you can see the sky full of birds in this picture.

During my visit to Battle Harbour I enjoyed learning more about the Eider Duck species through presentations at a conference.

Equipment: You need good binoculars and here is an incomplete list of species that were spotted during the time of my visit, verified by a Mr. Peter Thomas from the Canadian Wildlife Services division.

Rare Plants - Battle Harbour

Rare Plants

Plant Watching :-)

Before you yawn and think I am crazy just wait. A lot of research has been done in the Battle Harbour area and it is home to some of the world's rare plants.

If you are a Botanist this is an ideal location for seeing rare plants.

If you are just a hiker its simply worth your while to pay attention to the plants while you hike. From a distance along the rugged landscape you wouldn't expect that these plants were of such significance.
