There is a local brochure you will see on the island and they give some very good advice to make sure your stay is safe and enjoyable.

1. A first aid kit and assistance is available in the Herring Store.

2. Smoking is permitted in designated areas only.

3. Watch your step, especially at the edge of the wharf.

4. Small children should be supervised at all times.

5. Please watch your head when entering and exiting the buildings. Take care when climbing and descending stairs.

6. No admittance to the generator shed.

7. WARNING: Exercise extreme caution if climbing on rocks, especially near shore’s edge. Wet rock is very slippery and waves can break on shore with great force. Strong undertows are common, especially during windy weather.

8. The waters of the Labrador Sea are very cold, even in mid-summer. Swimming is prohibited.

9. No open pit fires.

When you are exploring this historic buildings you will see lots of markings on the beams above you and on the walls. These markings are actually authentic and real and chaulk was used during these times.

Some people in ignorance tend to wipe at these wondering if they are real or not. They are real and touching these marking endanger their life span so be respectful and help to preserve such an impressive national historic district.

While walking around the waterfront and various other locations you will see buildings from the early 1900s that have not been restored.

I recommend you appreciate these historic buildings however don't try to explore them.

They may not be secured, rusty nails are a risk and it can be dangerous and any unneccessary damage to these buildings will be it much more challenging for Historic Trust to eventually restore the buildings.

Many of the fishermen in the early 1900s were not tall people and the historic architecture is evident of this.

I am only 5 feet tall and 10 inches at most and I needed to duck in the Isacc Smith Cottage.

It is very amusing and again gives you a very real feeling of the era Battle Harbour depicts. Just watch your head and enjoy the cottage :-).

If you are boating alone or hiking in the area you need to pay attention to the weather.

In this picture you can see an example of a very sunny day when all of a sudden the fog rolled in very quickly through the area and then passed on again.

On the Atlantic ocean it can change very quickly and if your hiking the landscapes can look very similiar so be careful not to get lost!
