Historical Artifacts and other Battle Harbour, Canada Things to Do Tips

The Battle Harbour National Historic District is full of very old artifacts, I would estimate in the hundreds of items from the early 1900s that depict a fishing lifestyle.

I have provided a picture of some of these artifacts and a link to an external web site that has pages of more catelogued artifacts from Battle Harbour with explanations.

While in Battle Harbour you can take a guided tour of the entire site or you can explore all the artifacts at your leasure. Every item is properly taged with a description. This was one of the better jobs I have seen done in interpretation at various sites.

The Battle Harbour church was the first building restored by the local development association. In stands tall on the island and a must stop while you explore the island.

The bell in the tower still works and can be heard across the island.

The Rangers had a regular presence on Battle Harbour Island and the old Ranger Station is now restored.

Be sure to go in an explore this historic building and get the historical interpretation.

I liked the display that depicted the traditional uniform for the Rangers when they worked in Battle Harbour.

In Battle Harbour today you will still find the veyr old head stones of the people that occupied the island and lived in the very cottages that exist today.

If you pay attention to the cottage names and local stories you will recognize the names on many of the head stones today.

When you walk to one end of Battle Harbour the first grave yard is easy to spot and many people are satisfied that they found the graveyward.

But there is a second one. You have to turn right and hike up over the adjacent hill. A short walk then down a small valley and you will find the second one.

A number of years ago a pilot flew his plane straight into the hills on Battle Harbour island because of the fog.

The remains of the plane are still there. You just follow the trail to the hill top and a sign will direct you toward the remains.

You can then head for a white cross that is visible from a distance and you will find the crash remains.

On an annual basis the Battle Harbour Historic Trust in partnership with the Labrador Institute host a research workshop tailored toward the natural sciences and research being conducted in the area.

It is a great experience and learning opportunity.

In the evening you will get some of the great sun sets at Battle Harbour. Here is the view from the deck of the RCMP house in Battle Harbour while the sun is setting.

The sun looks so red it is amazing. Just relax and enjoy this part of the evening.

Enroute to Battle Harbour there is a highly likely percentage that you are going to experience some amazing ice bergs that are floating down the Labrador Sea and many then pass through the Labrador Straits.

You can see this one was amazing and our ferry captain was nice enough to give us a close up view!!!!
