The Bruce Peninsula

by jamiesno - last update: Aug 22, 2006

Quick Synopsis

In April 30, 2006 I was fortunate enough to participate in a best practices mission that was organized by a federal agency. I was nominated to attend by some colleagues and embarked on a four day mission to the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario. I knew very little about the area prior to this but after four days I got a great overview and would love to go back there some day for a relaxing vacation.

Enroute and returning there was an overnight in Toronto where I managed to squeeze in a baseball game one night and Lord of the Rings theater, Yuk Yuks and Club Seven on the returning night.

So that is how I got to Tobermory. While on the peninsula I also got to view a couple of small communities with the most note worthy being Wiarton, home of Wiarton Willie. Although this page is under Tobermory, it is essentially a Bruce Peninsula page with tips covering the entire peninsula but mainly the two communities I visited.

Thoughts on the Bruce!

The Bruce Peninsula as you will learn is one of Canada’s most developed tourism regions and a leader when in comes to trails. Its home to the Bruce Trail, several well developed mountain bike tracks and believe me my description isn’t doing the county justice. After this mission I will now be looking at areas hiking trails as a consideration when I am thinking about going somewhere.

The area reminded me a lot of Atlantic Canada which was surprising being in central Canada, but it is surrounded by water and we met several Atlantic Canadians on the trip. It is clearly a tourism based economy with lots of activity in the summer and it gets quiet in the winter. Late April actually turned out to be a great time for the trails and I would recommend that time of the year. If you enjoy nature you are going to enjoy the Bruce Peninsula.
