Caribou remains

Caribou Hunting - Warning Photo Not for Everyone!!

Caribou hunting in Labrador is a very popular activity and I highly recommend Labrador if you are into hunting. I have only gone once but it was a great experience and I am destined to go again.

With this tip however I decided to focus on an unfortunate activity you should avoid if you choose to experience some of the world's best Caribou hunting!!!

It has been a common problem that hunters take their kill to the main highway and clean the animal right in view of passing travellers and off all things leaving the remains. I took this picture right from my car. There is now a law against this however some people still persist.

Once again I truly recommend a Labrador Caribou Hunting Adventure but be respectful and don't do this! Happy hunting.

You will also need a provincial license and tags. There are limits on the number of Caribou you can hunt. There are also certain regions and herds that are protected so be mindful of this on your trip.

Equipment: A gun and snowmobile.

Directions: Trans Labrador Highway

Arctic Char on the Hook! - Province of Newfoundland and Labrador

Arctic Char on the Hook!

Arctic Char!

In the Labrador region on Labrador's north coast the arctic char are a very good fish to eat and have fun catching them.

They are very abundant and you shouldn't have to travel very far by boat to catch these awesome fish.

I was able to catch several just up the bay from Nain, Labrador. Here in this picture you can see a friend of mine has one on the hook!

Have fun!

Olympic Gold Medalist Mark Nichols and Mike Adams! - Province of Newfoundland and Labrador

Olympic Gold Medalist Mark Nichols and Mike Adams!

Labrador Winter Games

Labrador has one premier sporting event and its the Labrador Winter Games. Roughly 400 athletes participate from as many as 30 communities. It takes places every three years during March month normally. They past few times it took place in Happy Valley - Goose Bay with almost 650 volunteers to celebrate the sporting and cultural heritage of Labrador.

The games are often referred to as the Freindship Games but as a tourist if you want to get a true feel for what the whole of Labrador is like and represents I would make the trek to Labrador during these games an option. The price of hotels and all that stuff will stay the same so its not like paying through the nose for a trip to the Olympics.

But during the games you will get to experience all the different cultures, that would be extremely expensive to experience by visiting each community. The games also present rare opportunities to experience some traditional sports like dog team racing, the northern games, etcetera.

Snowmobiler in Central Labrador - Province of Newfoundland and Labrador

Snowmobiler in Central Labrador

Snowmobiling Heaven!

Right throughout the Labrador region snowmobiling is very popular and it has been throughout history because in many of the communities it is the main season mode of transportation.

In recent years the government has invested heavily into groomed trail developments making Labrador a premiere destination for snowmobiling. I can attest to it and highly recommend it as a once in a lifetime adventure.

There are precautions you should take however the trails are extensive and many possible itineraries.

I provided the web site address for the governing association that has trail maps, etcetera with other useful information for this sort of outdoor adventure. I recently bought a Polaris snowmachine and it is well worth the investment.

Smokey Mountain Ski Area - Province of Newfoundland and Labrador

Smokey Mountain Ski Area

Downhill Skiing in Labrador City at Smokey!

If in Labrador City during the winter season there is endless activities around cross country and downhill skiing. The other popular activity is snowmobiling.

The Smokey Mountain Ski Club was established in 1959 by the Iron Ore Company of Canada. It was started by a group of ski enthusiasts who built a rope tow and temporary ski lodge on the southwest face of Smokey Mountain. This location did not offer enough potential for further development and during the summer of 1961 the whole operation was moved to the present location on the east face of Smokey Mountain. The lodge was built and was opened on New Year's Eve, 1961. The Iron Ore Company of Canada built the road to the ski lodge in late 1961. During 1963, the first poma lift was built on Grenoble and Smokey became incorporated in 1964.

Directions: Right of the main Trans Labrador Highway across from the Gateway area.

Pinware River, Labrador Straits - Province of Newfoundland and Labrador

Pinware River, Labrador Straits

The Pinware River

There are a number of rivers throughout Labrador that are also very accessible from the major highways and great for fly fishing.

If planning to visit the Labrador Straits region you can stop at the Pinware River.

You will have to buy a provincial license and other than that you are off to the races. There can be a number of black flies in the area so just bring along some bug repellant.

Directions: In the Labrador Straits region, the most southerly region of Labrador.

Float Plane at Otter Creek, Labrador - Province of Newfoundland and Labrador

Float Plane at Otter Creek, Labrador

Labrador Fishing!

Labrador is home to some of the best fishing the world has to offer. There are a number of different opportunities for fishing.

If you are into remote fishing there are a number of private tour operator companies that will take you inland. The Eagle River is one of the more famous destinations.

I provided a web site link to just one company that offers seasonal tours into the northern region of Labrador.

Float planes and helicopters are the most popular modes of transportation to get to these destinations. Many famous world figures have been known to fish the waters in Labrador.
