While I don't doubt the veracity of the many VT'ers who warn about the pickpockets...by the volume and urgency of the notices, I was expecting to be followed around town by hundreds of waif like children, a colony of fake pregnant ladies, and a squadron of shifty eyed men....What did I find....a couple of drunks and a few beggars....I was careful with my stuff and kept aware of my surroundings, but didn't have any issues at all...and trust me, I went into some pretty sketchy alleys and also visited the Termini area at about 1130P as well... Don't be overly concerned , but also don't let your guard down... Wear your backpack on your front, lock the zippers if possible, don't take money out in public, etc !!!

Don't know if it is a warning or danger, but it appears that a pretty lady has better luck with the police as they are more than happy to pose for pictures. Also as the picture can attest, they aren't always at the fullest of attention - or maybe they were trying to lull the criminal element into a sense of false security. Overall, they seemed very friendly and helpful to be fair.

Well actually, despite what the country music song might say, it can be a problem. To enter St. Peter's Basilica and some of the other attractions around town, you need to adhere to the following dress code: Men: No shorts, no tank tops Women: No short skirts, shoulders covered. I recommmend zipper pants or a sarong.
