Before entering into the coliseum, walk around to get a visual of how big it was. Imagine the ancient citizens filing in, just as we do today for a football game - the only difference being - the participants were often killed...

While extremely overcrowded, you need to make your way to this room. I found other areas to be more amazing in terms of artistic value. It is incomprehensible that this (along with other works around the city) were mostly done by one man. Rules: be quiet, no pictures, keep moving - fairly strictly enforced - but you can sneak a picture - or better yet burn one into your memory

Designed in the 17th century by Bernini. It is a gathering place for Christians, and is the main route to St. Peter's Basilica. It is surrounded by two colonnades with four rows of columns. The obelisk in the center was brought to Rome by Caligula from Egypt.

Look up along the colonnades for some fantastic architecture. Don't miss it as you are in such a hurry to get to St. Peter's.

Alas, I can't give you much of a desription of the inside of the Basilica, as my short pants caused me to be refused admission. It was 32 C, so I wasn't about to wear long pants. Next time I come with the zipper pants. The outside is pretty amazing, but better seen from afar, a great view is from Castel Sant' Angelo. Rules: no shorts, no short skirts, no bare shoulders...Strictly enforced !!!!

Look at the Swiss Guard and their colorful uniforms. While they may look rather ceremonial they are actually highly trained soldiers. They are the Pope's personal security force and stand very stoically on guard.

This began as the mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian. It was converted into a fortress for the popes in 6th century AD. Walk to the top for a great view of St. Peters and also other sites in Rome.
