Recent Assignment: (May '02 to Oct '06) : Fort Greely, Alaska, 5 miles South of Delta Junction.

Lots of hiking, climbing and fishing there.

Glacier Hike

Abandoned mining equipment

Here's some old gold mining equipment abandoned along Gulkana creek. I decided to hike up the creek to the face of the glacier and pan for gold there

Flowers along the way

I made this hike 4 times with 4 different groups before I finally made it to the Galcier face. The first three times we failed to make it all the way due to management errors in the selection of hike routes :( The final (and successful hike was made with a smaller group and no help from management :)

Here are some flowers along the way? Know what they are? I have no clue, to a Texan these flowers look like bluebonnets. "Wild Lupins"

College Creek Foot Bridge

Foot Bridge

Imagine hiking up along a partially frozen creek and you come up to this foot bridge. The bridge had a thin coat of ice and swayed in the cold, wet wind. We ventured on! Our courage landed us on the North side of College Creek.

Success

Glacier

After three failed attempts we made it all the way to the glacier face on July 1, 2002. Here I panned for gold in the freezing melt water. It was fun yet unproductive. We had a great time and learned a lot about judging and mis-judging distances in Alaska! It's also fun to note how much ice and snow we had to contend with in May, June and July
