No - not really. Florence in November is very laid back as the tourists stay away and the Florentines reclaim their city. They do not seem to worry about their almost empty cafes and restaurants or the lack of browsers in the shops and markets. I was told the personality of the city was rather arrogant? stand offish? and I think it is a little this way. But now, on my third day, I am getting smiles and eye contact and enjoying the manners and mores. In Rome you get the Roman look if you do something stupid - a sort of scrunched up piggy looking face - in Florence you seem to get the exquisite arched eyebrow. Here you see me almost alone in front of the duomo - Matt climbed the campanile. I did not. Too chicken. |
| | Here is the old bridge and it is really old. It used to be all butchers' shops - maybe you could let the blood and guts fall into the river - but now it is all jewelry. Some of it very nice too, but all of it is really expensive. |
| | And here is the famous lucky pig. Rub his nose for good fortune. There is a copy of this guy in Sydney, Australia - some people from Firenze donated it. But this porker is the real thing with a very well rubbed nose. Matt took a photo of me stroking him and two young workmen - one pushing a trolley - there is a market in the covered area just behind - and one on a bike - paused so as not to ruin the pic. Now, that is manners! And how often would they have to do that? Pause so a tourist could get a pic. I was impressed. |
