Cairo-traffic nightmare

There are roughly 16 million people who live in Cairo and that figure increases every year. There are people everywhere. When you are out walking aroudn the city and you want to cross the street, you may not always find a crosswalk or blinking green man that indicates you may cross. What you will see is people crossing in-between rows of traffic without flinching. The streets and roundabouts can get quite congested. Just be patient and if you are of the "back-seat driver" type, it may be best not to look out the cabby's window. They are safe and they do require you to wear your seatbelt.

"Free" Tours

Egyptians are very generous and extremely helpful. Everywhere you go you will find them trying their hardest to find you what you need. However do not be surprised to find that you may have to pay someone for their trouble. This can be found at both the Pyramids and other historical sites around Cairo. If you happen to get caught by a guide that won't leave you alone, do your best to agree on an acceptable price before you get going with the "tour". I found this to be the case in the Cairo Zoo. The gentleman who helped me and my friend out said that he worked for the zoo and that he does that sort of thing all the time. His English was excellent and he was very knowledgeable about the zoo itself. So I didn't mind paying him a little bit for his time, but I should have agreed on a price before the end fo the tour. A simple "no thank you" would have worked.
