The archpelago of the Seychelles are extensive and include more than 1,200 islands, however 3-4 are inhabited; Mahe, Praline and La Digue.
If you want to experience the closest thing you'll ever get to the authentic Robinson Curuso feeling, head for La Digue. There are no cars, just bikes and burros for some very colorful island flora rides.
Most visitors balk at the high prices for hotel rooms, but due to ecological concerns, the # of hotel rooms available are limited. This is actually great if you want peace and quiet in unspoiled beauty with out crowds or noise.
No where else on the planet beats La Digue and Praline for beautiful beaches, except for Micronesia. On Praline, the northern-most coast is kissed with two of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Anse Lazio and Anse Claudette. There are other eastern beaches on Praline, but they are very shallow, although still beautiful. This area is called 'Gold Beach'.
Getting back to La Digue. The best beaches are on the southern tip of the island. There are three small beaches, seperated by huge granite rock formations. You must go on foot to reach them all. It is an easy climb, sandles are sufficient.
If you go to the very last beach, make it NUDE! ( I made it nude one day. ) Suddenly, by noon, it was an official nude beach. :-) There is nothing more earth binding than swimming nude in emerald-azure waters... totally liberating.
Take water to these beaches, there are no facilities for fresh water. Also bring fruit. The temps get well into the scortching zone by 1 PM, after all, its on the equator.
Go back into town for a good salad, take a nap and read a good novel until it gets cooler. The heat is unbelievable.
At night the fruit bats come out. These things are so huge they look as though they could carry away a small child. |
