  • Pakistan has some absolutely stunning trekking! The number and variety of trekking trips is almost boundless, all the high-altitude trekking is in the Northern Areas and North-West Frontier Province (basically the areas North of Islamabad) with the glacier treks up to K2 Base Camp, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum and Masherbrum being in the Baltistan region - accessible by a flight or bus trip to Skardu and then Jeeps to the head of the trek.

There are plenty of Pakistani companies offering treks - try searching online for K2 Pakistan Trekking type things and you should get quite a few hits. I found about 21 local companies to choose from and then ruled out dodgy sounding ones and finally found one to suit my interests, budget and departure date. I went with Adventure Tavel - http://www.adventure-touroperator.com/ (Give me an email if you want more details)

  • My one regret about the trip I did to Pakistan was that I planed it as a trekking trip but found that I would have loved to have a couple more weeks also visiting the wonderful cities and towns. In the end I only really spent 4 days in Islamabad (see my Islamabad VT Page) an d 1/2 a day in Rawalpindi getting lost on our way to the renowned Saddar Bazzar and ending up in the motor-mechanics areas of the city!!

In the North I would highly recommend at least spending a few days in Rawalpindi, Peshawar and Lahore (which my father visited on a trip he did and absolutely loved!). These three cities are well-connected by train and bus routes and offer a range of accommodation for 5 star luxury to extra-cheap conveniently located places. Check out Pakistaniguy's Lahore page for some good info as well!

This photo is of some of the buildings in Rawalpindi that my friend Ray and I saw on our 1/2 day exploratory trip from Islamabad.....done on the cheap by public minibus.

This is good. And clearly you agree with me: Pakistan is Asia's best-kept secret! And the north--what can I say? I just hope you make it to Swat, Hunza, and Chitral, too, some day...
