I arrived here at the first of April, 2005 directly from Plano, Texas. You have to understand, Plano had already entered into hardcore springtime and shorts and sandals were appropiate most days. Arriving in Fairbanks was somewhat of a shock because you still had to tread lightly on the ice and snow. With a borrowed parka, I set out for a two month adventure in a wonderful land.

Fairbanks people seemed different. Perhaps it's because they had somewhat of an "outpost" attitude. Here, artists, outdoorsmen(women), business people and retirees co-existed together. Late April was the time of year when they straddled winter and summer. Some days, you'd swear winter was over then a couple of days a new cold front and snow would come back and dump the place with snow and put it back like you saw it before what you thought was the breakup.
