Things To Do: "Imperia" Harbour Statue

  • Konstanz - Imperia Harbour Statue
  • "Imperia" Harbour Statue
  • by Gentleman75

  • The statue is 9 metres high and weighting 18 tons. It refers to a 16th-century Italian courtesan of the same name. Honoré de Balzac, the famous French novelist, transported this historic figure to Constance in literary terms. His "Contes Drolatiques" are a literary monument to Imperia. The statue has her arms outstretched and is holding two grotesque figures who have donned an imperial crown and a papal tiara, the insignia of worldly and religious power.

Things To Do: Constante "Triumphal Arch" or "Lenk Fountain"
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Peter Lenk, the artist from Bodman, one of the best-known contemporary sculptors from the Lake Constance area, deals mainly with our society's mania for cars, but also with our leisure behaviour. The over 30 comical figures are unmistakeable caricatures of well-known and less-known personalities, symbolically bridging the gap between the past and the present.

The "Imperia" Harbour Statue is also Peter Lenk's work.

    Things To Do: Schnetztor Gateway
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Gateway with an outer courtyard built in the 14th century to mark the southern city boundary. Apart from the Powder Tower (Pulverturm) and Rhine Gateway (Rheintor), mediaval Constance's only defensive structure still in existence.

  • Northern city gate erected around 1200 to protect the mediaval bridge.
Downstream stands the Powder Tower (Pulverturm), built in the first third of the 14th century as the north-western corner pillar of the city's fortification. Also used for a time as the city's prison.

    Things To Do: Townhall (1)
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • The paintings on the facades which face Kanzleistrasse (1864) depict important scenes from the city's history, as do the frescoes in the entrance hall on the frits floor.

    Things To Do: Townhall (2)
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • The inner courtyard bears the unmistakable hallmarks of the spirit of the Italian Renaissance and is well worth seeing. The heart of the collection of buildings is the linen weavers' guildhouse, which dates from the 16th century.

    Things To Do: Trinity Church
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Today's parish church, which dates from the late Gothic period, is the last visible part remaining of the city-centre Augustinian Monastery, founded in 1268, dissolved in 1802 and pulled down several years later.
The frescoes in the church was painted in 1417/18 at the request of King Sigismund.

  • At the end of the pedestrian zone, there is the Main Railway Station with its neo-gothic tower. It was built 1860-1863. The station is a reference to the important medieval links between Constance and Florence.

Things To Do: Minster of Our Dear Lady
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • The present building was begun to build in the 11th century and contains work from different periods since then and it came to end in 1853 with the building of the neo-gothic pyramid tower. The crypt under the chancel is the earliest part of the building and dates from the 10th century.
The Minster was under reconstruction when I was in Konstanz, but it was worth to visit, because there were so many things inside: Crypt, St. Maurice's Rotunda, Cloister, St. Conrad's Chapel, St. Thomas's Choir etc.
