In January 2002, I was part of an expedition to clean up tonnes and tonnes of waste from Bellinghausen Station on King George Island. My company was one of the expedition's sponsors and I won an essay contest to be one of two staff from around the world to participate in the cleanup with Mission Antarctica. |
|  | During our time there, we lived on a small yacht called 2041 (named for the year the Antarctica Treaty comes up for renewal). In addition to cleaning up Bellingshausen, Mission Antarctica's aim is to educate today's young people about the importance of Antarctica and have them experience its awesome beauty first hand. This is because it is these young people who will be making decisions in 2041. |

| | On my voyage there were 12 of us representing the UK, Canada, Russia, China, Australia, Lesotho and Ecuador.
It was truly a life-changing experience. Antarctica is a majestic, sacred place that must be preserved. I will always keep a little bit of Antarctica in my heart. |
