Erfurt is the capital of the Free State of Thuringia. It is situated centrally in the Thuringian Basin and has one of the best-maintained town centres of medieval times of Germany, now under National Protection. Many churches, monasteries, buildings of the Renaissance period, cathedral and cathedral square render this town interesting for all visitors. Erfurt is over 1250 years old, and also now a town of trade fairs and congresses. Of particular interest: the Erfurt Domstufenfestspiele (festivals on the cathedral steps).
