Collingwood was up until about 1970 well known for being a ship building town, as well as having the grain elvators to take on up or down the Great Lakes. That is all gone now. It is still the gateway to the highest elevation of skiing in central Ontario - especially now with ownership by Interwest, who developed Whistler BC. There are also the apple orchards towards Thornbury, and summer cottages and homes for those wanting to enjoy the waters of Georgian Bay
