Department store Take-aways/Cafeterias/Food Halls: When in London....

Restaurant Name: Department store Take-aways/Cafeterias/Food Halls
As a tourist staying near Oxford Street, I got tired of eating and paying restaurant prices for lunch. Even the pub meals got rather tiresome. So, I looked around and realised that right along Oxford Street there were alternatives - Selfridges' Food Hall, Marks & Spencer's food hall, and the cafeterias of some of the other department stores.
Favorite Dish: All we wanted was some cheese & fruit.... nothing fried, nothing heavy... just a drink of "pop" and something to nibble on. There was an amazing range of food to choose from... and if you had a cool area for storage in your room then you had it made. I loved the range of sandwiches that were fresh and much cheaper than in the restaurants.

Regent Palace Hotel Carvery: Carveries... A step up from a Buffet/Smorgasbord

Restaurant Name: Regent Palace Hotel Carvery
As a 15 year old experiencing new things in London, the Carvery was exciting. I'm not sure if it still happens but then, we carved our own meat. I know there are many hotels that have Carvery dining rooms/restaurants, and it isn't anything really unique. But it is nice to have that option of getting the amount of food you really want, not what the kitchen serves out.
Favorite Dish: Roast Beef... done as I wished.

The Samuel Pepys -Vintage Inn: Romance by the River

Restaurant Name: The Samuel Pepys -Vintage Inn
The problem with mentioning a restaurant after many years is that, if it still exists, there are likely to be many changes for the bad or good. I think that this is the case with Samuel Pepys on Stew Lane. It took me time to locate it, and except for the map agreeing that it was where I thought it was supposed to be, it certainly didn't look like the place I'd been. I had a very romantic candlelight dinner here back about 1979 - it was on the Thames, and the man I was with was making sure that I had a wonderful evening. A red rose, and the atmosphere was old world charm, with the oaken beams. I could imagine Samuel Pepys being down there with his cronies. According to a website I found, they have modernized it, just keeping the shell, and changed the tone. Back then it was a pub with food, and now it is food with alcohol. However, it is still along the side of the river, and was pointed out by the riverboat tour guide.
Favorite Dish: Well, I couldn't tell you what to eat now because it is a different menu, and a different place altogether. The best part is still the location. I still think it is a romantic place to go.
