"South Jutland" Sønderjyllands Amt by bscott1

South Jutland is relatively flat but has a few beautiful historic towns and beaches. Also notable is the cross-culture exchanges of Germans and Danes around the border. Germans south of the border are taught in Danish, as well as nearly all Danes being fluent in German north of the border, as apparently required in the schools.

A few notable attractions in South Jutland include:

Ribe - my favorite in the vicinity and I plan on taking more pictures of this wonderful medieval town. Ribe's medieval cathedral with it's two mismatched towers, as well as the narrow streets and brightly painted doors makes this a place to spend an entire day visiting. Despite the small size of 8,000 people this place is packed with history!

Rømø - the beaches are enormously wide--the guide says it's about one kilometer wide, but I wouldn't be surprised if was as much as 2km wide when I visited. Rømø has some neat fishing villages and churches.

Møgeltønder - A very small town, but almost picture-perfect. The church in town is extremely-well preserved, and there is also a beautiful castle and park outside the town center. It's good for a stopover.

Tønder - A market town, Tønder was once known for its lace, and some of its architectural hails from the bourgeoisie of that era.

Sønderbørg - A hilly small fishing and trading port city, there is a castle in the middle of town that contains a large museum detailing the wars between Germany and Denmark as well as earlier history.

I plan on exploring a bit more around the winter and spring of 2004 and adding a couple more locations to the site. Also, check out the travelogue of some rural photos.
