Things To Do: Visit Hoboken
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is more than just a bar town, you know! If you're visiting NYC, this is a great day trip,. just hop on the PATH train to NJ. Washington St. is the main street, with many shops and restaurants, and don't miss Sinatra Park with its stunning panoramic views! Definitely a do-not-miss.

Things To Do: Head for the Shore!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Of course, you must visit the Jersey shore! My favorites are Pt. Pleasant and Wildwood (free beaches!). Point Pleasant has a cute town center and boardwalk. Wildwood is at the southern tip of NJ, and a fun destination!

More info on my Point Pleasant page...

Things To Do: New Jersey Seafood Festival

  • This festival, held in June, features great food from local seafood restaurants, wine-tasting, live music, artists, and activities for kids. It's right on Belmar's waterfront, across the street from the beach. It's a free event--parking is on the street, so go early. You must go if you're in the neighborhood.. and love seafood!

Things To Do: Grounds for Sculpture
  • Tip Rating:
  • I love this park--it has contemporary outdoor sculptures, impressionist paintings recreated in 3D, a tree walk, and an outdoor cafe which overlooks a recreation of Monet's garden, complete with Japanese bridge and pond. You feel as if you are in his paintings!! What's more, you may unexpectedly have lunch with a peacock. They roam free on the park grounds (they don't bother you-it's really delightful). Definitely a must see!

Things To Do: Native American Indian Pow-Wow, North Jersey
  • Tip Rating:
  • A pow-wow is a great way to learn more about Native American culture and traditions. There is a festival held in Northern New Jersey in Budd Lake. Typical exhibits:
**Native American drummers and singers, and hundreds of costumed dancers competing for prizes.
**Wildlife exhibits, including live eagles, hawks, and owls, plus buffalo, bears, and wolves. Handlers will give presentations on their animal companions.
*Native American foods, including buffalo burgers, fry bread, Indian tacos, and buffalo stew with wild rice.
**50 of America's finest Native crafters. Native American arts and crafts will be for sale.
**Aztec Dancers from Mexico City, performing ancient ceremonial dances, including the Sacred Fire Dance.
**Visitors can stroll through a tipi village and listen to various Native American and environmental lectures in the "Education Circle."
Admission is $8.00 for adults, and $3.00 for children 6-12. Children under 5 may enter for free.

Things To Do: Native American Indian Pow-Wow, South Jersey
  • Tip Rating:
  • Yes there are Native American Indians in New Jersey! (You've never heard of the Lenni Lenape??) This is a great festival, especially if you have never been to one. Food, crafts, performances by Native Americans, and giant teepees you can walk into!! I have been to several of these, one of which featured live endangered wolves, and other animals, so it's very educational. The art, especially the jewelry, tends to be of a very high quality. You can get a ring or pendant in gold or silver with all kinds of beautiful gemstones. When I had my house decorated Southwestern-style, I picked up some neat things here, like animal skins, skulls, and turtle shells!

    Things To Do: Barnegat Lighthouse
  • Tip Rating:
  • Being that my ancestors are connected to the sea, I have a thing about lighthouses. There are many in New Jersey, including Cape May, Twin Lights, and Sea Girt.

    Things To Do: Cape May
  • Tip Rating:
  • You must go to Cape May, at the southern-most tip of New Jersey. You can see traditional architecture, go to the beach , the lighthouse, and there are cute shops. It's a beautiful shore town.

Things To Do: Seashore House Tour
  • Tip Rating:
  • Did you ever drive down LBI and admire the ga-zillion dollar waterfront homes? Well, you can actually see what's inside with the Seashore Open House Tour. It's a fun thing to do and see how the rich people live!! I went a few summers ago and it was fun to get ideas for interior design, too.

    Things To Do: Ellis Island
  • Tip Rating:
  • Ellis Island, the gateway to America for millions of immigrants from the 1890's to 1954, is a must-see, no question! You can get there by ferry from Liberty State Park, and it's the first stop on the ferry. You will need a few hours here, unlike the Statue of Liberty, where a half hour-45mins. is probably enough. The Ellis Island Museum exhibits are endless, and quite interesting.

See my Ellis Island page for detailed information.

Nice overview of your home state. We now have a new Ikea store here in Frankfurt, just 20 minutes by bicycle from my house. (20 minutes by car, too, because they have to go a long way around.) Great that NJ now has a light rail system.
