Restaurant Name: The Belmont Tavern
You would probably drive past the unassuming facade of this local bar/restaurant. But guess what? It's Newark's best-kept secret, and locals have been coming here for years. Experience real New Jersey here!
Favorite Dish: Best known for its Chicken Savoy, the Belmont also serves the best Shrimp Francese. Personally I think ordering the pork is a mistake. Get the Mad Chicken if you don't fancy the vinegar of the Chicken Savoy. Tips on How to Order: ~Be prepared, do not act hesitant. Do not ask unecessary questions, like, "What does it come with?" ~Do not drop your fork. it's the only one you get. ~Don't even think to ask for dessert, there isn't any. That being said, it's a great Jersey-type place (if there is such a thing). Red-checked vinyl tablecloth, photos of the owners with famous celebrities who dined there, you get the picture. Who cares about the decor when the food is so good? The place is jumpin' on the weekends, so may expect to wait at the bar, depending on the hour. Liquor License: yes

Casa Vasca: Basque Cuisine

Restaurant Name: Casa Vasca
My family has been coming here for years. You will meet Maria, the lovely and personable proprietor. The service is excellent, and the food is Spanish Basque. You must have the chorizo and garlic shrimp for appetizers. Then maybe you and a friend can split an entree, or get one for each of you, if you're really hungry. The portions are oversized. Don't get the paella unless you are starving because you will be brought a cast iron pot filled with rice and shellfish. I am not exaggerating!! Expect to bring home doggie bags.

Restaurant Name: Kazu Sushi
The chef, Kazu is originally from Osaka and a friendly, personable guy. Fresh fish, cozy atmosphere, nice people, great service--what more can you ask for?
Favorite Dish: Everything is good, and the rice is perfect. I have had sushi in Japan--this is just as good if not better!! Try the Rainbow Roll, and of course, sit at the sushi bar to watch him make it. P.S. BYOB

Fresh Mozzarella and Cannoli!!

I actually drive 70 miles to Hoboken to get good bread, fresh mozzarella, and Italian pastries. Well, okay, I do stop and visit family, too, while I'm there. If you're in Hoboken, there are so many places to get good food, and not just in restaurants. The delis have Italian food products, and most make fresh mozzarella. I always stop at Antique Bakery for bread and pizza dough. I usually can't pass up the smoked mozzarella at Fiore's, either. Hoboken is only one square mile, so stroll around and enjoy!

Ragin' Cajun: Cajun Food

Restaurant Name: Ragin' Cajun
This restaurant serves New Orleans and Creole dishes. It's in a house, so the atmosphere is homey with eclectic furnishings. They can turn the heat up as you like it--regarding the entrees, not the house!! For example, one of my favorites, the etouffee, rates about a 6 on the spicy-hot scale.
Favorite Dish: Try the alligator sausage with tiger sauce. Yum!

Restaurant Name: Ironbound District, Newark
Ferry Street in Newark is known for its Portuguese culture. Here you will find shops, bakeries, and Portuguese restaurants. I hesitate to name just one--I think you should just go and try one! Ferry Street is one of my stops when I am in northern New Jersey and hungry.
Favorite Dish: Cannot leave without having the chorizo and the garlic shrimp.

Piccolo's: Absolute Best Cheesesteak Sandwich

Restaurant Name: Piccolo's
I love this place because I see everyone I know (kind of like Cheers, where everybody knows your name), listen to Sinatra music which plays constantly, AND get a great cheesesteak. Trust me, forget about Philly cheesesteaks. This is not chopped thin meat slivers---you get an entire steak on crispy French bread. You need to have a cheesesteak here. Don't go for the burgers or anything else. Just...you know what.
Favorite Dish: You know what to order, right?

Restaurant Name: Java Moon
This is a great place for sandwiches/salads. It's actually a log cabin with new age-type decor inside.
Favorite Dish: Try the four cheese MoonFondue Dip. I especially like the Muffaletta. The sandwiches are enormous with fresh olive oil, prosciutto, and signature sprig of rosemary. Near the Jackson Outlets/Great Adventure.

Restaurant Name: Kelly's
Favorite Dish: Come for the giant reuben: the corned beef is piled high and falling out of the sandwich. You may want to split it with someone, although I have eaten a whole one by myself. You can sit at the bar or at one of the small tables surrounding the bar. If you're at the shore, don't miss this place!

Frank's Pizzeria: Nuts for Knots!

Restaurant Name: Frank's Pizzeria
You know, good pizza here in the shore area is very hard to come by. Having lived in Northern New Jersey all my life, I have high standards when it comes to pizza!! This place makes a good pie, and the garlic knots are the absolute best that I have ever tasted. They are covered in a ton of garlic--no need to ask for extra garlic! They have great rolls, too. I usually get the spinach roll which is packed with leaf spinach, cheese, and...garlic!
