You must have an espresso, but don't call it that when ordering. Un caffe (black) or un macchiato (with foamy milk). It's the best coffee and the cheapest, at around 70 cents! We had great coffee at Caffe Sant' Eustachio and a nutella-filled sfogliatella (you know, the clam-shell pastry).

From my experience, the local people did not hesitate to help or offer advice when we needed it.. All it takes is a simple greeting like "buongiorno" or "scusami"(excuse me), to ask for help. Try to learn some simple phrases to use. I will never forget the wonderful gentleman on the bus to Trastevere who kindly advised us when we had arrived at our stop. A small gesture which meant a great deal to us. I can give you a dozen more examples like this one!

Don't miss the following food: **suppli di riso (rice balls) **saltimbocca alla Romana (veal that "jumps in your mouth"!) **carciofi (artichokes) **fiore di zucchini (zucchini flowers-you can have them in many ways- fried, or on your pizza with anchovies!) **gnocchi di patate (potato gnocchi) **pizza alla Romana (how can you forget--the pizza!!) These are just some of my favorites!
