Restaurant Name: Castroni
This is like Balducci's in NYC. You can grab an espresso, sandwich, buffalo mozzarella, suppli (rice balls), the choices for munchies are endless. I had the potato croquettes and goat cheese rolled in prosciutto to snack on as I window shopped. They wrap it to go for you too, if you'd like.

Hostaria da Nerone: Overlooking il Colosseo

Restaurant Name: Hostaria da Nerone
Very nice place--we found it in the rain, in the dark. They weren't open yet, but upon seeing us wet and with a baby they took pity on us. Good food, excellent service. We sampled just about all the antipasti, our entrees were veal saltimbocca and cannelloni. We had cannoli for dessert, espresso, and we were delightfully surprised with the complimentary after-dinner Limoncello!

We were thrilled to find this place as we walked back from Vatican City--we needed a cold one after the long walk! Friendly bartender and waitress. All kinds of beers!

Restaurant Name: L'Orso 80
They will bring every conceivable vegetable in season, as well as prosciutto, buffalo mozzarella, meatballs, olives, just to name a few. The veggies were the best--grilled eggplant, fried zucchini flowers, cauliflower, artichokes. I think you get the idea. P.S. No highchair for the baby.

Restaurant Name: L'Orso 80
Favorite Dish: If you love mushrooms, you must order the pasta con la cremolata di porcini--porcini mushroom sauce. The first bite brought tears to my eyes--it was that good. The pasta was so fresh, I've never had anything like it!

Restaurant Name: L'Archetto
This restaurant has the biggest selection of pasta dishes that I have ever seen. I tried the Quattro Stagioni with four cheeses, and it was good, not great. I would definitely give it a second chance, maybe I ordered the wrong thing? There were so many choices, you need to invest serious time in reading the menu.

You know, sometimes the best way to sample the local food is not in a fancy restaurant, but in a local deli. These "mom and pop" businesses sell the real food! I recall one deli just outside the Vatican walls (if you exit the Vatican Museum I think it's through the walls and on your right). We stopped to buy water, and ended up walking out with zucchini flower foccacia and millefiori honey (local honey made with a thousand flowers). The whole bill was less than 10 Euro!!!

craic Sun Oct 26, 2008 11:26 UTC agree with you about the pantheon - and hi, we are neighbours on the ranking chart this week | AlexDJ Fri Sep 1, 2006 18:43 UTC Ciao Nicoletta! Very useful tips in your Rome's page! You look like a real roman when talking about our Capital! Good job! | JohnEhrlich Thu Jul 27, 2006 18:56 UTC Nicole, thanks for the great shopping tips. Since you don't like Vertecchi (I agree), can you recommend a top class paper store (not an art supply store) in Rome where I can find handmade paper? Any tips for Florence, Milan, or Tunin. Thanks! John | dookieshoe Mon Jul 17, 2006 00:25 UTC My husband and I hope to visit Rome this November and was delighted to find your tips from your mid-November trip. Thanks for sharing! |
