Venice Transportation
Sort by: Most Recent | Best Rated | Author's Order

Transportation: Waterbus

Getting TO/AROUND: The waterbus is main method of public transportation in Venice, for locals and tourists. If you want a tour of the Grand Canal, take the number 1. It is also the longest, slowest ride, so don't take it if you are in a hurry! Don't forget to buy your tickets at the tabacchini (T). They DO check your tickets~not always , but periodically~so have your ticket. In the entire month we were there, we were checked about half a dozen times. (But maybe they got to know us, LOL?)

    Transportation: Gondolas

Getting TO/AROUND: I have been to Venice three times and have never been on a gondola. I don't think I'm missing anything, really! I have been on "il traghetto",which is a stand up only gondola for locals crossing the canal. I don't recommend this though, because it can be quite wobbly! It was a cheap ride at 700 lira, compared to 7,000&up charge for a traditional gondola ride.

    Transportation: Arrive in Style!
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Ship/Boat
Getting TO/AROUND: If you want to splurge, arrive in Venice movie star style, in a private water taxi. We picked it up at Marco Polo airport and it took us right to the doorstep of our apartment. It cost about 120,000 lira at the time, but it was worth it because we were too pooped to deal with any other form of transportation or walking!

Rospo does mean "frog", or rather "toad", in Italian, but it also means "monkfish", presumably so-called because the monkfish is so ugly.

Great that you stayed in Venice for a whole month on each visit, so you really had the time to go to all those fascinating mask shops.
