Hiking to the Geltenhuette

by firechick - last update: Feb 17, 2003

Gorgeous hiking near the Lauenensee

Crossing a swollen stream
You can hike to the Gelten Hutte (hut) in one day and stay overnight there and from there, are several hikes you can do. Wildhorn is a nearby mountain you can climb, or you can take an easier but different route back to the Lauenensee.

You take a small road to the Lauenensee (single-track with pullouts) and park in the lot to start.

Beware of 2 things - one is that parking costs a fee by the hour and secondly there is no cash machine in Lauenen (you need to go to Gstaad or another village for money)

Reaching the Hut

It takes only a few hours of hiking (OK, mostly uphill!) to reach the Gelten Hut. You need to book this in advance, by the way. Speaking German helps but isn't a requirement. The caretakers of the hut are very nice and the hut is comfortable and has blankets and nice beds. It is very well-kept.

Don't forget to stop and smell the flowers!

Well, not necessarily but definitely look at them - they are everywhere in spring and summer in the alps when you are hiking. All colors - mostly smaller flowers. Take the time to look at them up close when you stop for a lunch or rest break.

See the Traveloge section for more of the hike, including more mountainous sections.

Pros:"Amazing views, comfortable and nice hut"
Cons:"Steep approach - not for people who have never hiked before"
In A Nutshell:"A great hiking in the Bernese Alps"

You do lovely photography (looked also at your Flickr site). We go to Gstaad this coming Friday for the 4th time in 6 years and will renew our acquaintance with the surrounding hiking trails...keep up the good work.
