Annecy is a place we often take friends or go to when the weather is bad in Chamonix (where we live) and you can't see the mountains. It's about a one hour drive from Chamonix on the autoroute. Also not far from Geneva if you are staying there.
It is a beautiful city, even if it's raining! It has a very medaeval feeling to it, and the beautiful canals that run next to buildings here with their crystal clear water are relaxing to watch. Swans and ducks float around in the canals, and several restaurants have seating along them. There is a large lake, and if the sky is clear you can see it ringed by mountains. Boat tours of the lake run all the time in summer.
It is the capital of the Haute Savoie department (74) of France and has a number of lovely old monuments, chateaus and churches to visit as well as a very nice shopping district. |
