A friend tipped us off that we should visit Sisteron on our drive from Chamonix to Cassis. We spent a night and a day visiting this town.
Sisteron is an ancient place (over 4000 years old!) in the Alps de Haute Provence. It is called the 'gateway' to Provence and has a pretty interesting history as a fortified town.
From it's high cliffs (the other side fo this photo, actually), rise the fortification of the Citadelle. This magnificent structure built into the solid rock has guarded the town through the ages - though not always perfectly - the town changed hands many times over the years.
It was founded by Celtic Gauls, then taken over by Romans. It was pillaged in the 11th century, and suffered greatly from Plague epidemics (several times) in the 1400s and 1500s, and then in the 1700s Typhus again decimated the town. It regained strength again only in the 1800s. |
