ALMATY KAZAKHSTAN

TWO KINDS OF WEATHER

HOLY ASSENSION CHURCH
This is the solid wooden Russian Orthodox Christian Church. The Holy Assension Church has survived many earthquakes.

I have been in Almaty in the middle of winter, and in the middle of summer. Both have there own beauties. The streets of Almaty are lined with tall Oak trees, which are green through summer, providing cool shade and a pleasing vista. There are many large parks and gardens. Summer or winter, the streets are clean. Money for general maintenance has been scarce since the Republic gained independence from Russia some 10 years ago, but an effort is being put in now to upgrade and repair the streets. You will find a few beggers in the streets. Mostly these are poor souls who are invilid in some way, but there are also a few who choose to live this lifestyle.
ANKARA REGENT HOTEL

HOTELS

There are many excellent hotels in Almaty. The Ankara Regent (5*) is at the top end of the range at US$300+ per night. Company discounts can apply. I have stayed here on many occasions on business. Buffet lunch or dinner can be US$30+. Another 4 star option is the Dostyk.

Recently I stayed in a comfortable three room suite at a tourist hotel for US$52 per night including breakfast
