"Strathdon - peaceful remoteness" Strathdon by Mara88

My favourite castle - Kildrummy

Kildrummy is a 12th century castle in a clever strategic position, which featured quite often during the Scottish Wars of Independence!

It is surrounded entirely by woodland & just to sit there on the stones & let the world go by is wonderful. Is never overrun by tourists, which I usually like. In order to get a "real" feeling of a place, it must be calm & peaceful...

Gorgeous chapel windows

These beautiful chapel windows on a rare sunny day (yes, it's blue sky!) are just wonderful.
Interestingly, the chapel was built on the first floor within the buildings instead of the usual small separate ground floor building.

Corgarff Castle - the garrison

Further up the road towards "whisky county" (Morayshire), you will find Corgarff Castle on the way. Turned into a Black Watch garrison, it was purely of military use during the "pacification" of the Highlands!

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Gorgeous scenery & castles, peace & quiet
  • Cons:Remoteness (acc. to some), cold & breezy
  • In a nutshell:Amazing countryside

Planning to come back to Scotland later this year -- these remote castles are great and this one certainly looks remote!
