The actual Civita di Bagnoregio is a medieval village, like many others in Italy... Like many others? Mmmmmm, not completely, there is a BIG difference.... Civita is really CAR-FREE! And not because the municipality decided that way (with the usual exceptions of locals, etc, etc) but simply because the only connection with the high hilltop of the village is a narrow bridge, with only a walkway. Actually, a little cart like Ape or a moped can do it, but, really, no car. So it has the true taste of an ancient village. Very few inhabitants, but you can find a bar, a restaurant, a church, a few rooms. What you can visit now are the remains of the ancient town. The rock under the basements is very crumply, and little by little falling down. In roman times, the hilltop of Civita was connected with the main town of Bagnoregio, but in 2000 years the erosion did what you see nowadays. |
Where is it? Well, Civita di Bagnoregio is in Lazio (the region of Rome) in Viterbo province, justa at the corner with Tuscany and Umbria.... Locate Orvieto and Bolsena lake, and Civita is somewhere in the middle... Os simply use a mapping site ;-) |
