You just have to visit. It is famous for the Movie "La dolce vita", for the believe that, tossing a coin into the fountain, you will come back for sure. An interesting think to know, however, is not so obvious. The water of the fountain is supplied by a real roman aqueduct, more than 2000 years old! It was the only aqueduct to survive (with little restorations after middle age) for such a long time: called "Aqueduct of the Virgin Water" it was built by Marcus Agrippa in 19BC and called the Acqua Vergine. It is this aqueduct which supplies the water today also to the Piazza Farnese, Spanish Steps and Bernini’s Fountains in Piazza Navona

If you like history or archeology, in the very center of the town you have to visit the imperial forums... yes, the name arrived in the internet with the meaning of "the places where people meet each other"... like ancient romans did in those square an buildings. Here you can visit the ancient "Senatus" (another name survided more than 2500 years, right?) building, the Curia (see the floor on pict #2). And, winking to all of US VT friends, the picture #1 is from the Capitol Hill... Oh, yes, the ORIGINAL one! ;-)

Both the square and the building took the name from the ancient republic of Venice embassy, thet was here... Right below the capitol hill and the stairs of the patriotic "altare della Patria" you cannot avoid to cross this square. In the picture a view focusing on the sea-pine trees so typical of some roman landscapes...

This was the biggest masonry dome of its age: It has a big hole in the center, the "oculus" (=eye). To build this dome, the ancient architetcs had to experiment new tecnicques to keep it light. The masonry is thinner more you approach the oculus, and the ancient concrete is filled with pumice stone, and terracotta amphoras. Well, the dome is still standing, so...

Piazza Navona has still the shape of the ancient "circus" (or horse race stadium) that once it was. Still one of the most lively and nice spots of Rome, and a obvious place to visit. So the shape is ancient roman, the architecture (and its fountains...The pictures in one of them) are pure renaissence style.
