Not so much a warning for the tourist as a warning for the resort. My latest visit to Hurghada left me amazed at the lack of action by various guides to protect the reefs on a snorkelling trip.
On our boat, cigarettes were disgarded over the side (the filters won't break down and will choke any fish trying to eat them) and they allowed shells with creatures living in them to be removed from the sea to be taken home as souvenirs.
You may think I'm being a bit of a Greenpeace hippy but if you want your snorkelling trips to be to destinations as shown in this picture, carry on taking 'souvenirs' home with you. The coral can soon grow back in a few hundred years.
To be blunt; The reefs are a very finely balanced, fragile place. We are just visitors there and must leave nothing, touch nothing and take nothing. Even touching the coral can kill it
