Southeast Rio Grand Valley's Favorite Border Town | Karen & Stephen at Nuevo Progreso |
Nuevo Progreso is a small but bustling village that seems to have been built especially for tourists. It is just 5 miles south of the Texas towns of Weslaco and Mercedes via FM 1015. It may be the perfect place for a first time visitor to experience a Mexican border town. This is not the typical Mexican village, but the streets are lined with small malls, curio shops, clothing stores, dentists offices, and pharmacies. Many Texans as well as retired "snowbirds" from the northern U.S. and Canada come here for prescription drugs and dental work because of the savings, although old timers tell us that the savings aren't what they used to be. Nuevo Progreso is no doubt the favorite Mexican shopping destination in the southern Rio Grande Valley. |
