Detroit River and the Detroit Skyline

Favorite thing: One of the best things about visiting Windsor is the fabulous view of the Detroit River and the Detroit, Michigan skyline, dominated by the International Headquarters of General Motors. This beautiful river joins Lake Huron (via Lake St. Clair), and Lake Erie. It also divides (come say connects) the Motor Cities of Canada and the USA. Detroit/Windsor is the largest metropolitan area on any international border in the world.

The Detroit River offers opportunities for boating, fishing, and swimming. It is also the an important corridor for freighter traffic, and the source of water for the cities along its banks.

Fondest memory: We especially enjoyed strolling for more than an hour along the riverfront with the gang of new friends we met at the Windsor VT meeting. The river is a beautiful shade of blue, especially when the sun shines on it.

Favorite thing: If you are not Canadian, be sure to keep the receipts from any items you purchase while you are Windsor, or elsewhere in Canada. These may be presented as you are leaving the country to apply for a refund of the sales taxes you have paid.

Favorite thing: We once heard a man from Windsor refer to his city as "The armpit of Canada." Perhaps he was jesting. All we can say is that if it is so, Canada sure has a lovely armpit.

We've spent a total of 5 days now in Windsor and Essex County, loved every minute of them, and still have much more there we would like to see. That's why we recommend you begin your visit with a stop at the Ontario Travel Information Center. It's located at the corner of Goyeau and Park Streets in downtown Windsor, a short four blocks south of Riverside Drive. Here you will find loads of information on the many things to see and do in the area, as well as clean public restrooms and a Currency Exchange.

Fondest memory: No doubt our fondest memory of Windsor is the wonderful people we met there, including local VTers "Waalewiener" and "Windsorgirl."
