Stilwell is a town in Eastern Oklahoma in the area that was populated by American Indians after they were driven westward during the infamous "Trail of Tears" in the early 1800s. About 48.5 percent of the local people trace their ancestry to Cherokee and other American Indian forbearers.

Stilwell is 31 miles SW of Fayetteville, Arkansas and 79 miles E of Tulsa, Oklahoma. It is the county seat of Adair County, Oklahoma. As of the 2000 census, the city had a population of 3,276.
