"Marietta, Ohio" Marietta by Stephen-KarenConn

Marietta Travel Guide: 19 reviews and 113 photos

General Rufus Putnam and 48 pioneers landed here April 7, 1788. Within three months they had surveryed land, laid out the streets, and inaugurated a government. It was the first settlement in America's newly designated Northwest Territories. At the time the area consisted of what is today all of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and parts of Minnesota.

Many centuries earlier the area had been inhabited by Moundbuilders, both from the Adena culture, 800 BC - 100 AD, and the Hopewell, 100 BC - 500 AD.

Marietta flourished as a port during the riverboat era, and still retains much of the charm of and interest of it's historic past.

Nice pictures and good tips! Next time you're in Marietta, try Austyn's and Levy House Cafe for dining--both are only about 1/2 block from the LaFayette Hotel.
