Hamilton, Ohio

by Stephen-KarenConn - last update: Jun 3, 2007

Butler County Courthouse, Hamilton, Ohio
Hamilton, is a small city of 60,000 people in Southwestern Ohio. Unfortunately, it is often overshadowed by it's two better known neighbors: Cincinnati, 25 miles south, and Dayton, 35 miles north.

The city traces it's beginnings to Fort Hamilton, a frontier outpost built on the east bank of the Great Miami River in the late 1700s. The curious traveler will find much of interest here, particularly in the areas of history and the arts.
"First Ride," By J. Seward Johnson, Jr.

"City of Sculpture"

Anyone who travels into downtown Hamilton will notice the many works of sculpture located in public places throughout the city. An example is "First Ride, at the Fitton Center for Creative Arts, 101 South Monument Avenue. It consists of two figures, a father and a his daughter. The girl is seated on a bicycle, attempting her first ride, as her father stands behind her. Unveiled in 1997, it is the creation of internationally known artist J. Seward Johnson, Jr. Many other sculpures can be seen throughout the city.
