"Highlands, North Carolina" Highlands by Stephen-KarenConn

Highlands Travel Guide: 9 reviews and 23 photos

Standing at 4,118 feet above sea level, Highlands boasts the highest elevation of any incorporated town in the eastern United States. The local Camber of Commerce touts Highlands as being "Above it All."

Because of it's relatively cool summers, Highlands offers a much welcomed respite from the steamy lowlands of the south. The year-round population of less than 1,000 swells to more than ten times that much in the warmer months.

Highlands is primarily located in Macon County with portions of the town spilling over into Jackson County. It is in southwestern North Carolina, not far from the border of both Georgia and South Carolina.

We haven't visited this area in a long time - it might be a nice "get-away" for our September anniversary during Augusta's heat.
