"Kiowa, Elbert County, Colorado" Kiowa by Stephen-KarenConn

Kiowa Travel Guide: 2 reviews and 8 photos

I have been through Kiowa Colorado twice, once on a sunny, hot, summer day and and more recently on a very dreary November morning with a blustery wind blowing and a fresh dusting of snow on the gound. As it would happen, my photos of Kiowa was taken in gray November, but even such days have their own beauty.

The rather small and rustic look of the county seat belies the fact that Elbert County is actually a very fast growing area. It is situated on the high plains, in view of the front range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains and between the cities of Denver and Colorado Springs. As a result Elbert County is beginning to catch some of the spillover of the expanding populations of those metropolitan areas.

Elbert County encompasses 1,854 sq miles and has a population of approximately 22,000. The county is rural on the eastern side while the western part of the county is becoming more developed - populated with suburbanites who commute to the metro areas to work.

Elbert County has three incorporated towns: Kiowa, Elizabeth and Simla. There are also three smaller unincorporated towns: Agate, Elbert and Matheson.
