"Beautiful Downtown Chicken, Alaska" Chicken by Stephen-KarenConn

Chicken Travel Guide: 21 reviews and 43 photos

Full time residents in beautiful downtown Chicken Alaska number 11, although when one takes in the greater metropolitan area that number soars to 23. It is in east-central Alaska, 88 miles from Tok, Alaska, on the Taylor Highway, and 102 miles from Dawson City, Yukon Territory, via the Top of the World Highway. Both highways are only partially paved. The road, and all of the local businesses, close in winter.

Early gold miners named their town Chicken about 100 years ago. These hardy pioneers hunted ptarmigan as a meat supply, but they couldn't spell ptarmigan so then named the town after the bird it most resembles, the chicken.

Gold can still be found in the creeks around Chicken, and in the summer campers and miners give the town a seasonal population of more than 100. Chicken is the largest of only a couple of small communities in the 190 miles between Tok and Dawson City, on a highway that is winding and mostly gravel, so it is a favorite stop for those who travel this way.

Chicken has no telephones, no cellular phone reception, no flush toilets, and no electricity, except that which some individuals produce with their own generators.

Unfortunately, on the day I was in Chicken there was a lot of smoke in the air from nearby wildfires, so my pictures aren't the best.

Lovely little page :-) I do hope to meet Tucker, Ivory and Ebony, to chat with the locals in Chicken Creek Cafe and to send you a postcard from this great looking post office in Chicken.

The place you stopped at is not the only cafe in town. The Outpost was right across the street in the Chicken Gold Camp and had an excellent Italian paninis and homemade soup special with specialty drinks. It was a newer looking and cleaner cafe.

Glad you had fun. Perhaps you should have stopped at the Chicken Gold Camp when you walked to the Pedro Dredge then you might have found that there is a 2nd cafe, 3 gift shops, espresso, gold panning and tours of the dredge. See www.chickengold.com
