The beautiful Island Maui. The first inhabitants at Maui were the Marqeuses, they came in 750 A.D. in their dubble hulled sailing canoes, they brought their best hunters, their families, their animals their crops and their plants. After the Margueses the Tahitians came and brought with them their godesses and their religion. In November 1776 Captain Cook discovered Maui, and soon after came the traders, the Whalers and the Missionaries. At the height of the Whaling era (1840 to 1865) more than 500 Ships anchored at Lahaina. After a bloody battle in the Iola Valley, King Kamahameha took up resident at Lahaina and the Kings decendants reigne over the Island untill 1872 .In 1893 the Monarchie was overturned and one year later the Republic of Hawaii was founded. In 1898 Maui was annexed by the United States, and in 1900 Hawaii became the 50 th State in the U.S. |

Merle (the Pearl) was a great driver and a very good Tour Guide, and Merle was funny and his knowledge about the Island and especially about the plants and flowers on the Island was remarkable.
