Durban a beautiful city in Prov.ZwaZululand -Natal

by Waalewiener - last update: Dec 21, 2002

Durban's Zulu name is Tewkweni.

City Hall Towers.
The native people were called Nguni and Durban was called Tekweni. The first European
that saw the bay were now Durban is developed, was Vasco De Gama
when he was on a pioneering sea voyage to India in1497.
Durban got its name from Sir Benjamin D'urban , who was the governor of the Cape Colony at the time of the first succesfull colonial settlement in 1835. Since that time Durban has been colonised by first the Dutch and later by English Traders. A large number of Indian labourers were brought to Durban during the 19 th century to farm the emerging sugar industry. The traders and their ancestors form a large percentage of Durban's population.
City Hall Durban

City Hall of Durban , building finished in 1910.

When driving by City Hall on a thursday night you can catch the sounds of the KZNPO playing their beautiful concert music. There are also Sunset Proms and music by the Lake where people show up by the thousands with their children and their picnick baskets to enjoy
some culture and some dry red wine.

A nice shot of the Clock Tower with building .

The City Hall building also houses an Art gallery and a Museum that features Birds and Mammals. There is also an International Conference Centre in Durban, and it is centrally located, and it is an innovative world class convention centre and it can hold conferences of up to 5000 people.
