How It All Began...

Back when I was a naive, spotty teenager, I developed a yearning to travel. I have no idea where this inspiration came from, or where it would take me, but it burnt so deep I could not suppress or hide it.

When my mother pointed out an article in a local paper, she probably had little idea of what she was starting. It said that a guy wanted to take his ex-army truck down into Africa to start a safari business. Where there any volunteers to help out? The cost of the three-month trip was £220 ($300). That was ridiculously cheap. Even back then, I should have known better...

The following extracts have been taken direct from my journal kept at the time. I have made no effort to conceal my ignorance, which at times makes me cringe with embarrassment. This was just how it was. We all have to start somewhere.

You will be delighted to know these travelogues are only snippets of a 32,000 word journal ! !

The quality of the photographs are, sadly, very poor. The camera I took was an ‘instamatic’ that had been given to me for my thirteenth birthday. Even the flash was broken! I knew little better...

The Sahara has a fascination; a beauty that has no comparison. It can be romantic and cruel, relaxing and harsh. Time can become insignificant, distances infinite. Dreams of what this desert was like became an obsession and the only antidote was to see it for myself...

Enjoyed reading your first visit to Morocco - conjuring up the pictures in my head as youve gone along!and my own experiences and so on there! Thanks for sharing so much!
