A Terrible Beauty

by travelinxs - last update: Jan 16, 2005

[still under construction]

WHY ?
My journeys to Israel were full of visual and tangible contradictions. There was the beauty of the landscape juxtaposed against the ugliness of battle paraphernalia. There was the warmth and kindness of both Israelis and Palestinians who in turn were hell bent on alienating each other. There was little fluid consistency in those journeys. Few days could be predicted. But I loved it and will always be ready to return again.

I first went out in 1988 and lived and worked there around 6 months, volunteering on a Kibbutz then later working on mushavs. After a 6-week visit to Egypt I returned again for a spell in 1989. I did not return again until 1998, when I only spent a week transiting through to Jordan. These are a few photos and stories from my time there.
