The Garden Route is probably the most scenic region in South Africa. Nowhere in the world will you find a place as beautiful and diverse as the Garden Route.
Wilderness lies 15 km east of George, between the Kaaimans River and the Goukamma Nature Reserve. It is renowned for its vast stretches of beach, its tranquility and the absence of windswept headlands and wild, stormy seas. Wilderness overlooks not only the sea, but also the placid lagoon (Touw River Estuary), the Serpentine, which meanders between the Touw River, Island Lake, Langvlei and Rondevlei. Island Lake is a favourite water sport venue, drawing enthusiasts from far and wide. |
Encompassed within the boundaries of Wilderness one finds the 2500 ha Wilderness National Park. Five rivers and five lakes, two estuaries and 18 km of Southern Cape coastline are protected within the park.
Take a stroll along The Boardwalk which is part of the Pied Kingfisher Trail and home to a wide variety of birds. The winter climate is splendid with sunny days and temperatures that rarely drop below 10? C. The annual rainfall averages around 700mm.
By way of accommodation, there?s something for everyone - hotels, guest houses, Bed & Breakfasts, caravan and camping and various self-catering establishments. Wilderness Tourism Bureau offers a reservation service at no charge. The charm of Wilderness is its other-worldliness, its sense of being cut off by its boundaries of sea and forest from the hectic work-a-day world. Head for the indigenous forests or our spectacular coastline. Explore Jubilee Creek; the historical gold mining village of Millwood or the beach resorts of Noetzie, Plettenberg Bay, Brenton, Knysna... |
The sporting enthusiasts have a wide range of sports on offer, from hiking, golfing, bowling, tennis, squash, to water sports - fishing, scuba diving, sailing, windsurfing, water-skiing etc.The Indian Ocean
An absolute must. A scenic trip on the Outeniqua Choo-Choo, an unforgettable experience, gives you the best of all worlds - the sea, the forest and the mountains.
Discover our Nature Reserves or the Lakes area. The scenery around the Wilderness Lagoon rates as some of the most beautiful in the world. The coastline is quite spectacular with long stretches of white sandy beaches and safe swimming. The dolphins play in the warm waters and the whales come to visit every year. In contrast we have tall cliffs dropping into the ocean and rocky outcrops full of Nature's wonders. |
