A small European City in the Deep South | Looking down an alley way in Charleston |
There are a handful of streets that run from the wall where the Atlantic Ocean meets the massive concrete Battery (pronounced Battry) in Charleston, South Carolina, within view of the spot where the horrible carnage of the Civil War was begun ... a small cluster of streets and a bundle or two or three of houses and other buildings from the time before the War between the States ... where the homes of very rich, many of whom urged War, remain standing and proud and sagging here and there in the tropical sunlight. |
