It was our last night in Lisbon … the last night following a handful of countries and flights and long drives in fast cars. In the morning we would be on our way home. We wandered to the waterfront, across the highway and down and down until we came to a boardwalk. It was Friday night and the people getting off from work were finding spots in the bars, outdoor cafes and restaurants that fringed the harbor … starting their early summer night cruising. I heard the familiar voice and piano of jazz singer Diana Krall, a record I had been listening to for the past few weeks. We stopped at the outdoor café that was playing her music and listened to the entire album … two caipirinhas each. Satisfactorily softened by the refreshments we returned across the highway into the city and stopped in a small diner on a side street – the sort of place that cab drivers congregate in late at night. I couldn’t tell you where to find it, wouldn’t recommend it for the food … but the cheese was fresh and the wine was sweet and so was that night in Lisbon.
